Orwell was penning this novel in an age of totalitarianism, primarily in Spain, Germany, and the Soviet Union. By leaving the Ministry at this time of day he had sacrificed his lunch in the canteen, and he was conscious that there was no food in the kitchen besides a hunk of darkish-coloured bread which had bought to be saved for tomorrow’s breakfast. There are various minor characters in 1984, including coworkers on the Ministry where Winston and Julia work, or other prisoners on the jail Winston is taken to on the end of the e book.

Until now, Winston has been merely another member of the Outer Get together, going about his day by day routine with little cause to draw consideration to himself, except for the unorthodox thoughts inside his head and the diary that he begins...
